Kids and Halal/Haram Isues

As a matter of fact, all the foods that are haram for Muslim are indeed for obvious reasons - such as the nature of the animals, the improper method of slaughtering animals or method of preparations. In short, we only eat everything and anything that is clean, halalun toyyiban.

In English or Malay Language, we say "dirty" or "gross" or "kotor" to translate Arabic word "haraam" when referring to these haraam animals, which in my humble opinion, might be taken as an insult by our non-muslim neighbors. But in Japanese, there was a better term for explaining "haraam" animals which is "kegarawashii" ... instead of "kitanai" (gross/dirty)

Anak cik F was 7 years old. In the schools all around Canada, it is mandatory to inform the school if your kids have some kind of allergies (or so I was told) as per law requirements or else both the parents and the school may face some kind of civil and criminal liability with harsh penalties.

So one day, some government staffs were making a routine visit and ask the students if any of them have allergies. So anak cik F raised his hand. The teachers and the staff were very surprised because they didnt receive any notice from either cik F or her husband about his allergies. The teachers were nervous as well.

Government staff:  So do you have any allergies?
Anak cik F:  Yeah.
Government staff:  What are your allergies?
Anak cik F:  Im allergic to all haraam foods.

Last night, Mr Z told me a rather amusing story that took place in the mosque while he was there with his friends for an occasion. There was this tahfiz teacher asking his students aged around 6-7 years old.

Teacher: "Who knows why pig is haraam?"
Students: I know, I know, I know!
Student A: Because the legs of the pig are similar to the leg of the devils! That's why we cant eat pig!
Student B: Because when they slaughter the pigs, they dont read "bismillah"

Teacher: Where did you guys get these ideas?

Lepas tuh entah apa sebabnya - Adi tak jadi ker sini...Hmm. Ada dengar2 cerita yang tak sedap, tapi let's not talk about wild rumours. Ok fine.

Saya pun dah develop komputer bercakap sendiri. Walaupun agak simple tapi at least komputer saya dah bercakap. So saya rasa Adi Putra tentu boleh buat komputer yang guna combination voice recognition and text-to-speech synthesizer (TTS) system, yg GUInya flexible and friendly utk visually handicapped people.

The Tale of A Mother

This is a beautiful story - of a mother, and my apology for being unable to convey the message in more beautiful words..

Last Saturday, we visited the family of a friend who involved in an accident. Their car skidded and crashed the median in the highway in the near-fatal accident where the black ice (icy condition of the road, after wet snow) was said to be the caused, since there was no overtaking or sudden lane changing during that time, and no other car was involved.

The car was totally out of control. The front tire came out and the friction of the metal caused the sparks of the fire. The front mirror scattered into pieces.Thick and black smoke and finally fire came out from underneath their car. The fear that the car would finally burst into fireball began to struck her mind. Both her children was speechless still in the back of the car.

The mother was heavily pregnant and was at her 8th month when the accident took place. Subhanallah, with her big womb, could still jump out of the car while the car was still moving at 100 to 110km/h.. Even more surprising, this mother, whose even small movement was normally restricted due to the heaviness and weakness in her third semester pregnancy, could turn back and pulled the automatic door from outside, while the car was still on the move at 100km/h.

She drained her last energy to save her two beloved children, dragged them away from the car and took them to the side of the road, before she completely lost her energy and passed out on the side of the cold highway.. while watching the car skidded direct onto the concrete block on the side of the road with her husband still in the car!

When she finally regained her consciousness, a passerby took them inside his car so that they can warm up. It was a very cold day, a flurry day following a heavy snow the day before that. Her husband finally came out of the car uninjured, after several kicks on the door, since the door was stuck and completely damaged.

After a while, the children were still unable to utter a single word while the husband couldnt even recognize their own son, as the aftermath of the traumatic experience. When the paramedic finally arrived, they expected to see casualties due to the terrifying sight of the car. The car was in total damage and hit the concrete wall, but all of them escaped without single bruise which, needless to say, surprised everyone there, including the motorists who helped them.

There are few points to ponder:
1. It was an automatic car, the door will not open if the car was still on the move.
But the mom managed to force the door open to save her children, while the husband still has to kick the door to go out.

2. The mom was in her 8th month pregnancy and could barely sit for a long time. But the energy she gained in such situation was such a miracle and unimaginable.

2. The mirrors broke and scattered to pieces due to the collision but they escaped without single bruise, which was very unacceptable to the logic of our mind.
The mom said that she saw a "white wing" just before the mirror broke, which definitely wasnt the airbag. The wing hid her face from the scatter of the mirror, thus completely saved her from any injury that could have been caused even by a single piece of flying glass. Walllahua'lam..

3. When the daughter finally able to speak again, she hold her mother's hand and whisper, "I love you, Ibu"

4. The first word that came from her son after a long silent was, "Thank you, Ibu, for saving my life. If you didnt save me, I dont know what would have happened to me."

I was speechless to hear such stories. My heart melted. And I fell to tears. Such story was too touching and reminds us, on how we were distracted to such hatred and ugliness of our own heart, when the nearest thing to us is the death. Life is so fragile.. and can be so short and unpredictable.

It also remind me that a mother is not a job neither a position. A mother is a gift of love.

A mother gave her life to Him, when she willingly carry us in her womb and finally gave birth to us, fully aware that she was risking her own life. A mother gave her life once, and would do it again and again for us, expecting almost nothing in return.

He (PBUH) said, "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father, then your nearest, then nearest". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

'Sumbang'an

Dah baca utusan hari nih?

'Teruskan niat jika tajaan dari sumber halal'

Mungkinkah saya patut baca tranungkite atau harakahdaily, untuk mengetahui kebenaran cerita tersebut dari pihak tok guru sendiri...
Tapi akal cetekku berkata...
Beliau tak terima hadiah mesti ada sebab, kan? kan?
Bukan semua hadiah kita "wajib" terima...lebih2 lagi jika kita ada some sort of kuasa..dan paling ditakutkan jika kita pemimpin sesuatu negara/negeri..
Kat Germany dulu, farewell gift pun supervisor mr Z tanak terima, takut mempengaruhi keputusan master thesis/project...

Kita..?

Beautiful debate on hijab

This is a beautiful debate on hijab, among 3 muslima. Whether it should be niqab, hijab or nothing at all.

I believe it doesnt take Dr. Cal Lightmen from "lie to me", to notice that the woman without hijab was certainly unsure about what she was saying, and even doubt her own statements at some points. In contrast, there was an adorable confidence shown by the woman in niqab. To state the obvious, i would conclude that the woman in niqab certainly knew what she was saying, and was very sure of her path, her lifestyle and her way of life. She chose it and she knew why.

While i was talking to one of my japanese friend in a ta'alim few days ago, a bangladeshi lady happened to hear our conversion and was stunned before she finally asked, "You('re) talking (in) her language (Japanese)?"
She was more than happy to know that i also studied in Japan that she exclaimed,

"Masya-Allah, i noticed that we have soo many talented and brilliant Muslim women here, or even all around the world."

Although being able to converse in Japanese language doesnt make me any special (they, themselves speak 3languages or more), i do agree that despite the saying that women muslim are being oppressed blablabla...we outstand some other women or even men! Many of us excel in various fields that we involve in.

Masya-Allah, these women i've met since we came here to uom have been very humble and nice. I am honored to be able to talk to them, hear their thoughts, and listen to their beautiful words. I am no one compared to them, whom have been working very hard to flourish the ukhwah and spread the words of Allah.

There was one sister who is doing her Post_PhD in UOM, another one is the alima who teaches Alquran to the muslim youths/kids. There was this lady who cook very good food and is willing to share the secret recipes with us all, while many others work very hard without being paid a single dollar, to organize all sort of majlis for the sake of ummah. And there is also this young sister, who returns to the school to finish her 30juz',to continue her passion as a tahfizah. And they are ALL VERY HUMBLE!

Masya-Allah.
May Allah bless them all! Whether or not they will remember me in another 5years ahead, they would always have a special doa right from my heart.

Nih untuk Aisyah :)

Fatique

Memang sejak zaman jepun lagi, saya ada sedikit low blood pressure. Tak serius. Just once a while rehat yang cukup, okla.

Kemudian kat sini, lepas buat ujian darah untuk beberapa jenis penyakit dalam 7pain botol berasingan (dah macam ayam, kt mesia satu botol tuh jer kan), predictably the result came back saying that I have very low hemoglobin(109 when the normal hemoglobin rate should be 120 to 140). Doctor called via telephone and asked me to write down the "prescribed supplement" . Dengan confident saya pun jot down ikut Dr cakap:->

S-E-R-R-O-U-S-S S-U-M-A-R-A-P-E!
Kelakarnya! Serrous sumarape! Serious sumarape?! kekeke
And Mr Z went to the pharmacy and later when he handed me the bottles, he said that the pharmacist told him that ubat dengan nama tuh tak wujud kat dunia! Hehe...Tapi nasib baik pharmacist tuh boleh agak.. I looked at the bottle and Ola!
FERROUS FUMARATE!!
Now that make sense...hahaha!
The tablet is to be taken one with meals, coz iron supplement might be too hard on stomach & may cause diarrhea, constapition etc. But later, doctor changed it to 3tablets a day, since im considered anemic and have very low blood pressure .That is 3times than the normal prescription...Duh~

That explain why Ive been very2 weak since i came here to Canada,I tried not to tell him or anyone, coz i was afraid to look weak. But i know this is weird, because traveling far had never been a problem for me!

Sometimes i wasnt able to stand up and needed to sit down once a while, while i was doing the dishes or cooking, my hands and legs trembled sometimes, and worst, whenever i woke up in the morning, my heartbeat raced to the max as if ive just finished a 100m dash. Even waktu first few weeks sampai, i need to eat always or else, i may need to sit still from Asr until iftar, as if the food ive had for sahur tak jadi nutrition. Worst, i cannot think of something serious and more than usual, forgot things easily. I really felt like

obaachan already!

Alhamdulillah!
Now i know what to do, since i know what have been causing these symptoms.
Insya-Allah, with the supplement, I would never feel sooo tired anymore. The most important thing is not my health, but someone inside me, n beside me. I believe, sometimes, suri rumah mana sekalipun di dunia, once a while kita broke down juga sebab penat. Dan bila kita rasa penat tapi takder tempat mengadu, kita nangis jer sorang2...pelik sangat ke benda tuh?

Read Between the Lines

In many ways, my husband and I are totally opposite to each other. In one way, I can say that we are both each other's 'the other side of the coin'...Still, it takes both sides untuk jadi sekeping coin :D

While I am extremenly skeptical in meeting new faces and somehow take a LOTT of time and courage to create a new circle of friends, he, in short, is totally a 180 degree to me. He has this 'humble' attitude that sometimes I feel like screaming to his face "do you really have to go that low humble?" And his reaction would always be the same, "Tak rugi merendah diri." Sort of.. I curl my lip when I see/feel that someone's showing unpleasant attitudes towards him. I mean, come on, pride and honor is not something that you should tolerate, right?

But foreigners or Malays alike, it is funny to see that some people 'obviously' act differently when they know that there is something that this man is capable of, I mean, when they realize that they might need some help from him in the future. Some sort of assets? Nope...taklah sampai asset, couldnt find the right word actually, tapi lebih kurang macam..nanti senang nak minta tolong kalau...blabla..lebih kuranglah.

Why cant we respect another human because he or she is a human? Not because he has some sort of additional title in front of his name? Neither his race nor his face?

So what?

It's been quite sometimes since i last used my yahoo mail. The mail was exclusively used for formal mailing, but ever since i have done with all the 'conferencing', 'seminar present'ing, 'viva'ing etc, there isnt anything left to do...and basically, the yahoo mail was used to keep my ym hidup.

This time, i need to send an email to someone but since the gmail has been stalling pasal apa ntah, 3,4 hari nih, i need to revert back to my old n faithful yahoo mail (faithful ler sangat, padahal phishing berlambak)..

So, heh?!!
Mana nk compose email nih?
Mana 'new'?
Errkkk...mana 'compose'?
Aduhhh....
Dah tukar format ker yahoo nih? Lama tak check..

Oh, ok, sini 'compose'...
Emelku berbahasa ibunda rupanya.. :D

Errkkk, haih?
Tak boleh nak upload gambar? Guano nih?
Mana 'attach file'?
Ishh? Takkan tak boleh attach?
Adihh..isk. ker kena upload ke photobucket dulu?

Me, "Ni yahoo nih tak boleh attach gambar la. Apahal arr?"
Adik no 2, "La, tu ada."
Me, "Mana?"
Adik no 2, "Tuh, 'lampirkan'."

Ok...
Attach = lampirkan.

Haih, teruslah perjuangkan bahasa Bush. Sila, sila...

'Forward' jadi 'kirim lanjut'
'2 friends online' jadi '2 dalam talian'
'spam'
apasal jadi 'spam' jugak?
'lebih banyak tindakan' nih apaaa?

Educator? Researcher? Lecturer?

For being outside the academic world (at least at the very moment), i would say that im no longer qualified to criticize anything abot how the government or the certain universities have been treating their loyal public servants who serve in the academic areas, namely teachers and lecturers.

Apart from being burdened with unnecesary report writings, time table planning and other ridiculuos, miscellaneous stuffs, there were also management works to be carried out. All and all. By the time they finally can stop to catch a breath, it's already final project presentation, where their respective supervisees would present what is supposedly to be the final year projects. But where are their own, their very own masterpieces?

Semua kerja sibuk, and sibuk is a very noble word. Tapi kerja biarlah diserahkan pada ahlinya. And a fashion designer can rarely fix a pipeline(hehe), unless he himself volunteered for the job, and is as skillful as he claimed to be :P

While that someone(lets call this person G) could have easily made $*k per month as the starting salary by working in dotdot, G chose to come back and serve the country, thinking that the government has did so much for him and that it was time for him to serve the nation. And G's genuine love for knowledge has made him to think that it was the right decision to opt for. In my humble opinion, there were quite some people whose learning ability were quite high, but was extremenly rare to find among these gifted people, those who harvest genuine love in knowledge without any hidden interest. It is sad. Worsen by the fact that these rare breed were somehow restricted from doing what they can do the best. Edison needed 99 failed experiments before his first light of hope appeared, right? (was it really 99? Wow..)

These people themselves, dont really whine about how the bureauacracy have been treating them. Few times, they might have said something and then fullstop. But then it was those people surrounding them whom were affected very much by this birokarapsi.

Aggh~
Three of the beloved juniors (of him) while he was studying in Germany asked if there were any vacancies in this precious uni. It would be fun to have them around here in this super boring PR. Since I have known them quite well, I can positively say that they could carry out any tasks given very well, since they are really very bright, extremenly industrious, genuinely hardworking and highly motivated persons.
(eh, cam testimony lak)

The only problem was that, can we rest assured that such talents and valuable resources would not go wasted?
Hmm...
Hmmm...

Perkara remeh pasti semua diungkit kembali,
Berikan sejambak bunga pasti dia tersenyum sendiri,
Pegang tangannya dan bawalah dia bersiar-siar berdua sesekali.

Jemukah sudah pada sang isteri?
Yang dulu indah bak bidadari..
Jangan dikejar yang tidak pasti,
Yang belum ditanam belum pasti menjadi...

--------------------

Actually i was shocked by this certain blogger who openly cerita about her failed marriage and kept on cursing his ex in her blog, and told the the things you wouldnt imagine a lady would tell, n more than what anyone would want to know. If you know what i mean.

--------------------

"Memang patutlah sang isteri diceraikan. Bila masak sahaja kurang masin, kurang sedap. Si isteri memang tak layak menjadi isteri. Suami mana yang tahan. Dia tak menjalankan tanggungjawabnya sebagai isteri dengan baik."

Lalu ketawalah sang ustaz dan anak-anak muda lelaki dalam kursus perkahwinan itu. Berdekah-dekah dah macam bukan ceramah agama.

Kemudian sahabat saya bingkas bangun mengangkat tangan,

"Ustaz. Kalau situasinya macam ni pulak bagaimana? Lampu di rumah saya terbakar, lepas tu saya minta suami saya betulkan tapi dia sendiri tak dapat betulkannya, maksudnya saya bolehlah minta cerai, kan? Taklik. Sebagai suami, dia gagal melindungi dan menyediakan keperluan isteri dan tak menjalankan tanggungjawab sebagai suami yang baik."

Ustaz tadi terdiam. Dan menyambung kuliahnya dengan nada tersekat-sekat.

Campak ke hutan, Humban ke laut

Bersungguh-sungguh mr z dengar ucapan Datuk Seri saya-akan-menjadi-pm-soon.

Tapi yang takjubnya, sangka saya, kita (Malaysian) sedang cuba membentuk negara maju, rupa-rupanya kita sedang cuba menguasai dunia...fuh~ serious misi ni. Datuk Seri, count me in! :D Errr... Tapi klu nk menguasai dunia, perlu ker tahu bahasa orang? Ingatkan redah jer cam Genghiz Khan... owh, saya salah lagi...

Kata DSN lagi, perlu adakan kursus 2hari 3malam, atau 3hari 4malam, dan bukan di hotel..tapi di hutan. Kalau perlu, kita campak ke laut...
ehehe...

Selamat berenang mr z :P

BM: High heels vs Sneakers

I had a pair of black and worn out sneakers, bought in the early twenties. The sneakers were very soft and comfortable and have been very loyal to these feet, that i refused to change them to any other shoes. Plus, it is extremenly difficult to find shoes that fit perfectly the in-between-sizes of my feet.

I used it almost everytime i went out,and in any occasion/ways that you could think of, cycling or jogging, in rain or in the snow, wedding or meeting. Until one day, my father looked at the pair of sneakers and shook his head, long enough that i felt quite embarassed and asked him why.

Ayah: "Is this the same old shoes?"
Me: "Yes."
Ayah: "That you bought while you were studying there?"
Me: "Yes."
....
silent.

Ayah: "Isk isk isk." (shook his head)

I grinned. I know that he wont ask me to buy another new pair, coz he already did many times and in no vain.. hehe. But this time, it felt kinda weird and embarassing, maybe because he said nothing at all.

Back to KL, me and my other half went for a mission - an extensive search for a new pair of shoes, and it took us quite some time before i finally found another new pair made from heaven..no, i mean, perfect for my liking. And i just looooove them so much, coz they have 95% of the look of my previous sneakers. Yes!

And I still wear my white high heels, once a while with the changes of the wind (directly translated from bila tukar angin, hehe). There were occasions that I just can not to not-to-wear them. For example, certain functions held in hotel, since it was obvious that how you look/dress would be one of the best topics to gossip. I still love high heels since apart from the fact that good high heels beautify a standing posture, they also add some inches to my height..:P But I didnt wear them that often, since i was far more comfortable with my sneakers.

-------------------------------------

------------------------------------------

Talk is cheap!
-tenaga pengajar kurang mahir.

Saya tiada masalah -on behalf of myself.

Bahasa Inggeris does not equal to technology.

Saya bukan siapa-siapa...

-----------------------------

Melainkan kita tinggal/mastautin di US, UK, Canada, New Zealand atau Malaysia contohnya... (err? Malaysia?

Comfortable Zone & The Small Self-esteem

I'm a stay-at-home mom now, and I personally think that for a woman to have choose to stay at home isnt the last option, but rather a wonderful choice that not all women can opt for, for one or some reasons. And to be able to think about it this way is just... recent. VERY RECENT, indeed.

I love to work. And I wanted to work badly, genuinely, honestly, very much. For those who know the reason, they would stop asking further intriguing questions. And they would know that I didnt drain my brain for the mscie degree just for the sake of adding another few miligrams to the fileholder.

The pressure and temptations are all around me. Forget the countless innocent questions or harass drones, coz i dont really care about other people's views anymore these days. It's all about me, my life. I can do only one thing, and that one thing wasnt cooking, or cleaning, baking, or sewing..or..well, let me make it short. Am very bad at doing all the stuff that requires handskill. And wasnt really the type of the last wanita melayu. I just know how to work, and found out that doing independent research really feeds my left brain very well.

And i think that almost all the research students would somehow be persuaded by the supervisor to continue to higher study, and under their supervision. Err..In my case, to doctorate la..But of course, with all the respect, while being grateful for the unconditional support and innumerable help by my previous supervisor, im still traumatized by the memory of the insufficient time, unavailable expertise(s), un'purchase'able equipments and unreachable facilities, all needed to complete my project. 'Suffocated' was just the perfect word.

My husband has always been very supportive to the ideas of me going to phd, and he has seen me in the future continuing my study, after he'd completed his study..which would be ..say, another 5 years? There's a catch in this :P- I'll help him with his research when he comes back to Malaysia again :P Arggh~ I just dont think i would, even if i could. Obviously, we were both two different entities that work and think in totally the opposite way. Boleh ke kerja di bawah satu projek? Nope..I dont think so :P And honestly, nowadays, my sole pray was to be in my comfortable zone - being at home, by their side.

Then few days ago, the newly 'recruited' supervisee (of my previous sv) contacted me for my 'help'. He would love to further develop my project, which left me floating on the cloud (literally? :P). It wasnt really a big deal if i were a student/academician myself, but the fact that an unknown foreign master student is interested in the project previously developed by this humble housewife, really injected some self-esteem into myself. I mean, whoa, I did contributed something... I did have a thesis. And I really am a mscie graduate...I was a student. Macam tak percaya.

Rasa macam nak start coding semula...

Kalau tulis angan2 kat blog, tak kena ISA kan? :P

Card Credit- The Fraud and The Beautiful Lies

CREDIT CARD: THE FRAUD

It's been one week since we called the Bank Islam Credit Card Center regarding the new cards which we havent received yet. We were still waiting endlessly for the response from the CC Center since the new Credit Card Chip (SMART)based which they claimed that they've sent us about a couple of weeks before, went missing in action (somewhere during the delivery?)... when I suddenly received a call from "Credit Card Center", Menara KL, last Thursday, asking for confirmation of my information as the cardholder. I was a bit relief since I was afraid that the card went into the wrong hand.

But wait, I didnt know that Bank Islam were operating from Menara KL?!

I confronted the guy on that matter and he claimed that he wasnt calling on behalf of bank islam but rather an independent credit card center which offers some sort of benefits and privileges to credit cardholders. We didnt really used the cc on regular basis, tak pernah over due date thus tak penah la bayar riba yang menguntungkan pihak ketiga..so rugilah kalau betul mereka nak offer segala macam benefits seperti yang disebutkannya tanpa mereka dapat untung (vacations, bonuses, insurance etc)(suspicion no 1)

We've been passive credit card users for almost ten years now and yet, I could hardly recalled it if they were a special organisation/company who took care of the benefits etc of the credit cardholders, not certain clubs (for membership privilege) or banks themselves.

This guy (who claimed his name was Tengku Izzuddin) was asking for confirmation of my full name (he was not sure on how to address me, as cik or puan- suspicion no 2) and asked me if it was a visa or master card (suspicion no3). And then I stopped responding to his questions when he started to ask for the expiration date of my cc (suspicion no 4). I 'sweettalked' him that I would sms him my expiration date since the number was 016 xxx xxxx (suspicion no 5), but then he claimed that i cannot sms him since he was calling from office and it was the office number, thus they cannot respond to any sms or phone call and insisted me to answer.

I told that guy that Ive left my cc in the house, and that i didnt have the info at the moment. Maybe he sensed my suspicions and thought that I was lying (I didnt :P),
"Owh, ini memang jenis yang tak boleh pegang card credit ler nih, selalu hilang."
And then gelak-gelak, konon friendly sangat ler tuh. I was a bit annoyed and told him off,
"Hello. Saya bukan tak bawak sebab takut hilang, okey? Saya kat luar sekarang nih. Saya tak berada di rumah dan cc saya tuh saya tinggalkan di rumah. Tempat yang saya datang ni tak memerlukan saya bawak kad kredit, atau purse sekalipun. Dan saya rasa saya tak perlulah bagitau awak tempat apa yang saya datang sekarang nih. betul tak?"

Him, "Habis tu bila saya boleh telefon puan semula?"
Me, "Okeylah, awak call husband saya jer lah. Saya ada kerja." And gave him his number.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Later, I called the number and my suspicions were right. He did pick up the call, (which confirmed mysuspicion that the call wasnt made from office or hotline number)...

"Ini Encik Izzuddin?"
"Ya, saya Tengku Izzuddin."
(Heh, kalau tak letak tengku tu hilang 'bisa' ker?)
I confronted him on his company background, and what was the nature of his company. And then he started to read apa benda ntah...macam baca script..

"Kenapa saya call suami puan tak dapat, yer?"
Hehe, I gave him his old number, of coz la kan :P... But later, I gave him his correct number..Let the men do the talk :D Malas nak layan.

And at the same time, I called Bank Islam to temporarily block my card. Tapi my husband lagi teruk, when i asked him what did he say to the guy,

"I told him, tak payahla nak expiration date ker haper ker, saya nak terminate card tu, sekarang juga."
He did terminate the cards..:(

I did my research, and found out memang betul ada scam/fraud over the phones. The legal credit card center sometimes would ask for your name, mother's name, phone number etc but not your card number and expiration date, kan?

CREDIT CARD - THE BEAUTIFUL LIES

Kat Jepun almost 10 tahun dulu, memang senang nak pakai kad kredit. Annual fee free or very minimum, visa and master card selalunya tak perlu penjamin, manakala kalau penjamin diperlukan, cuma perlu isi nama, telefon number dan alamat penjamin. Nanti diorang akan call dan confirmkan (my husband used my name, boleh pulak tuh, padahal i was a student, a foreign student, like him). Amex pun cuma perlu tunjuk buku akaun jer kut (tak berapa ingat).. Dan minimum requirements nya memang very minimum.

So rasanya hampir semua students Malaysia ada credit card, dan bukan satu, atau dua...kadang2 semua cards offered.. visa, master, american express (amex), jcb, apa lg ntah.. Tapi bila nak guna kat malaysia waktu tu sangatlaaa susah. Selain mereka agak suspicious dengan kita (budak2 tapi pakai kad kredit yang berwarna-warni pelik2, sebab kad kreditnya selalunya gabungan kad kredit n membership company mana2), kita juga agak suspicious dengan mereka, kerana di sesetengah kedai, mereka terpaksa pinjam kedai lain atau kaunter lain punya machine, so mereka bawalah cc kita kt mana2 untuk diswap. Hmm...

Kemudian sekarang, kat Malaysia, sungguh senang nak dapatkan card. Pergi mall mana pun mesti ada orang bawa pamphlets, padahal pergi dengan pakai tracksuits yang sungguh 'miskin' (heheh, it was me la). Dah tu, syarat untuk gold and platinum card pun dah makin mudah.

Jangan sampai jadi macam Jepun dah...
Ramai yang declare bankruptcy, sebab card credit. Suicide? Lagilaa...

Card credit nih banyak benar 'beautiful lies' nya..
-annual fee free: tapi untuk first year jer
@
-annual fee free: untuk principal jer, suppliment lain cerita
@
-annual fee free: kalau swaps/ transactions over certain number/amount
@
-tanpa riba: dengan syarat guna below certain amount
@
-tanpa riba: dengan syarat bayar cepat, within few weeks after the transaction
@
kalau tanak pakai n boleh terminate anytime - tapi mesti guna over 2 years
etc etc..

Ada kawan saya cakap, guna kad kredit tuh haram. Betul ker? Abis tu kalau travel overseas, kena guna traveller checques ker? Huhu~ debu-debu riba'...

Men are Like Wolves?

"Men are like wolves. They work in pack. Women are like tigers, they hunt alone." - my English teacher, 1995

The horrors of harassment and bullying in the school has become far too prevalent, when it shouldnt has been subtle harassment or overt. What is this with 10 big sempai (senior) against one helpless kohai (junior). That was totally 'nautical nonsense' (kata Spongebob).

Dont blame the teachers when the parents go gnashing their teeth bila dengar anak kena jentik tangan - huh~ baru kena jentik tangan, tak lebam pun. Cikgu dah tak boleh pegang rotan dah kan?

What is to become to the boys today? Cuma berani suwit2 girls waktu ramai2, cuma berani harass/molest girl bila ramai2, dan cuma berani buli budak kecil/helpless guy bila ramai2. Where have all the men go? Ok, kata kawan saya, all the good men were either married or died or not-really-a-'man' anymore. (Just kidding)

Menitik air mata sang ibu, bila anak pegi sekolah tapi mati selepas koma dibelasah. Apa agaknya reaksi kita jika..nauzubillah.

If what my teacher said was correct, then men should've been, as wolves are, fast and strong, sharp and intelligent, but very highly socialize and know how to respect each other's 'sacred' spaces.

Too much to ask for?

Education for the Babies?

Three years ago, we had a chance to visit Ulm, Germany, the birth place of the renown Einstein. There, we witnessed so many things being related to/named after the inventor of the infamous EFE aka Enstein's 10 equations, to name a few, Einstein Café, and this fountain ->

There were so many myths interwined the facts of his early history, especially when the genius himself can vaguely recalled his childhood. That, however, didnt change the legendary and shocking fact that the world renowned physician wasnt born a genius. In fact, some researchers claimed that he was born with mild manifestation of autism or Asperger’s syndrome, thus explained him being a slow learner (widely manipulated/exaggerated by the Hollywood film makers later on). However, his slow verbal development divert his attention to ordinary things that mostly left unquestioned – such as space and time. (quoted)

And what is this fuss with Einstein, suddenly? Well, nothing. Just me trying to reminisce the early education introduced to us back in 1970 to 90s, while at the same time, trying to figure out the best education to introduce to my not-so-little-anymore baby girl.

To coerce a single method to all child is obviously wrong. And to say that the learning method used by a mother is wrong, is absolutely wide of the mark. However, how far would you go in introducing your child to the world of abc and 123?

In Japan, my wonderful and sweet 30-something host mother, had his 9 to 5 work in an insurance company and yet, was forced to do another part time in a video rental shop (bideo ya san) from 3 to 6 in the morning. All for the sake of giving his 5 years old son the best education that money can buy, which costed them 50000yen per month. And the boy isnt the only child she has! The fierce competition among the preschoolers and the mothers/ parents in Japan wasnt a pleasing sight, after all. Traumatizing is the correct word.

---------------------------------------------------

Lagi teruk. Kehehe... Her mom was a typical chinese who wouldnt mind spending a fortune for her children's education. So she paid a fortune for his kindi. Tapi, him, being a typical malay boy, malas sungguh nak ke sekolah. Memangla dia tahu membaca, tapi ibu mana yang tak menitis air matanya, kalau sang anak langsung tak berkeinginan untuk ke tadika, sedangkan budak2 lain eager jer nak menulis mengira.

Sebenarnya saya kepeningan. Memang baguslah, tapi saya sendiri tak bersedia tengok si kecil saya terbeban. Tapi dalam masa yang sama saya tak nak dia rasa ketinggalan..Isk isk..Tamak, kan?

I didnt have enough time to enjoy my childhood. At merely 11++ yrs old, masuk asrama. Pastu straight belajar sampailah baru stop belajar 1 1/2 tahun lepas.

Pening. Saya masih pening.

Hadith of the Prophet (s.a.w.): “The child is the master for seven years; and a slave for seven years and a vizier for seven years; so if he grows into a good character within 21 years, well and good; otherwise leave him alone because you have discharged your responsibility before Allah.”

A Tribute to TDM

While so much has been said and written about Malaysia's most fervent nationalist, Tun Dr Mahathir, his personal life still remains (almost) unrevealed. To publish an entry as a tribute to such a great world leader in a personal blog like this would be an honor to the author herself. Although in my humblest opinion, i might have my own point of views that were somehow 180' to this living legend, there is no doubt that we were somehow very comfortable with all the achievements and progress made during his legacy.

His words depict his careful and deep knowledge. Always sought after his social, economical and political thought, it is really amazing how the most popular celebrity in Malaysia (at least) still manage to keep his personal life really personal. It's either there weren't so much 'endearing' secrets in his other life to create enough virulent polemics, or there were so many things, other than that (his words and his mind) that provoke more rhetorical analysis and dispensable arguments.

Just to share some true stories:
(In Japanese, loosely translated into english)

Situation 1:
Japanese 1: Where do you come from?
Me: Malaysia. Do you know Malaysia?
Japanese 1: Err..Malaysia? Mmm...Im sorry, I have no idea.
Me: Malaysia is a small Asean country, with neighbouring countries such as Thai, Singapore blabla...
Japanese: I see (still look confused)
Me: Do you know that the tallest tower in the world is in Malaysia? (At that time)
Japanese: Really? I dont know. Is it?
Me: Well, the prime minister is mahathir..
Japanese: Mahathir shusho (shusho = PM)..yea, i know. Mahathir shusho. He is handsome, right? And very 'strong'!

Situation 2:
Japanese 1: Where do you come from?
Me: Malaysia.
Japanese 1: Err..Malaysia? Malaysia..?Is it in.. (kepulauan mana ntah dia sebut)
Me: No. Malaysia is a small Asean country, with neighbouring countries such as Thai, Singapore blabla...
Japanese: ...
Me: Well, the prime minister is mahathir..
Japanese: Mahathir shusho. yeah, i know. Mahathir shusho.

Situation 3:
Japanese 1: Where do you come from?
Me: Malaysia. Err, the prime minister is mahathir.
Japanese: Arghh, of course i know that. He's quite good looking.
Me: ...

Heheh. These (hopefully) were three isolated cases that took place almost a decade ago and should not be made as a reference to reflect Japanese today :P

p/s: i want this ! boleh tak?

Bahasa Melayu patut dihapuskan

Jadi bahasa melayu hendaklah dihapuskan serta-merta! Kalau boleh, sekarang juga.

Setelah berkawan dua tahun dengan orang nigeria, kami baru tahu yang dia pandai berbahasa malaysia, sebab kami hanya berbahasa inggeris sepanjang masa. Maklumlah bahasa Melayu ni kan tak best. Jadi walaupun dia sangat fasih bahasa melayu, dia terpaksa men'slang'kan sebutannya sekali-sekala, takut kami rendah diri. Kami nak guna bm macam tak sampai maksud sebab banyak bahasa pinjaman dari bahasa inggeris, kamus dewan tuh pun dah macam kamus dwi.

Saya sayang bahasa ibunda saya.
Saya sayang bahasa warisan ibu bapa dan moyang saya.

Apa salahnya bangsa melayu berbahasa melayu?
Apa salahnya tau berbahasa lebih dari satu?
Apa salahnya bahasa ibunda kekal sebagai bahasa peneraju?
Apa salahnya kalau bukan bahasa pengantar, tapi sistem pendidikannya yang kita ubah terlebih dahulu?

Shhh!

"z, if you've been working hard on something and wish for the best of it, DONT tell anyone except to those whom youve known well enough, for you might have no idea of what's on their mind, let alone the prays that they say behind you."

said a friend of mine. At first, I thought that she was saying some arabic proverbs, coz she was an Arab resident and have always had a nice way to convey her thoughts, before i realized that she was as serious as... she was.

"Ive always been naive to everyone and thought that sharing good news was a noble thing to do. Then, I realized that everytime i was about to achieve something that ive been working on real hard, there would always be another thing that came up along the way."

Then there were stories that we shared, during that night. We have a wonderful chat, and it didnt take me too long to realize that i, myself, used to be surrounded by these sweet-talkers who had never meant what they said and secretly prayed for the opposite things to happen.

"Tell only those you trust, that would say nice words with or without you being there, and would willingly pray for nice things."

And what a wise and sincere advice she was giving me!

And Ive learned that despite my ability to simply despise anyone who says cruel things to me, i would also need to add that it breaks my heart the most, when the words come from the persons you love or trust the most.

If you don't have anything nice to say, then, say nothing... at all.
Shhhh!

Pelajar Muda vs Pelajar Tua

Pelajar Muda.

My hubby told me about the difficulty he has in dealing with certain young students of his, who have no or very limited knowledge in the vital, basic subjects such as Math, Add Math, and Physic. And these are Mechanical Engineering students!

Few days ago, he returned the test paper (which was held in the previous week) to the students. The results were awesomely awful. The whole class failed in the test except for this one student who passed with merely 41 marks. (And passing mark in Japan is 60, lucky him)

Thus,he announced to the class

Him: In a football game, if a team failed to perform in an important game, the coach would normally resign on his own will. Thus, I gladly announce my resignation. And start from next week onwards, you would be meeting a new lecturer.

..
..
..
And then there was this drop dead silence situation!...
The students were all speechless and were looking at him with this guilty looks, and with 'sorry, really sorry' written all over their faces.

Him: I was just kidding. I would continue my phd soon thus i need to reduce some of my workload and distribute some of my classes to the other lecturer.

And then there were sighs of relief everywhere, and few students exclaimed:

Student A: It wasnt the coach, but it was the players who did not train well.
Student B: Our striker was good for nothing, kept scoring our own goal.
Student C: Midfielder was much more useless and unreliable..
Blablabla..

Hehe, so officially, he is less busy by 4hours. Which means, instead of being extremenly busy the whole week, he would just be very, very busy. Huh~

Pelajar Tua

He has been offered to teach one JV programme since few semesters ago but everytime, he kept turning down the offer, before he finally surrenders to the persistent wheedle... of his wife. Ngehehe...

To teach a group of people age between 30 to 50++ is quite a painstaking task. They were all very well mannered, of coz, but to return to school after 20 yrs plus plus?

Situation 1:
After a 3, 4hours lecture
Him: Ok, ada apa-apa yang tak faham? Ada soalan?
Them: Err... buat masa ni belum ada soalan lagi... rasanya.

Situation 2:
Him: Pernah tengok tak equation nih? Dulu2 waktu sekolah menengah ada kan?
v = u + at?
Them: Mmmmm... macam~mm.. pernaa~ah tee~ngok?!

Hehe, when mr hubby told me this , i laughed since it reminds me of one episode from bujang lapuk..
"alif, ba, ta, sa... lepas tu tak tau, tak sempat belajar cikgu dah mati..Innalillah"

BUT,
whatever the reasons they might have behind the motivation to return to school after few decades, they are all very determined and have made a huge sacrifice by agreeing to do so. Some came all the way from Terengganu to KL, just for one day lesson. This determination is nearly nowhere to be seen within the younger ones. And why is that?

And there is still one thing that keeps me wonder...
- What is this with the surge into engineering (in Malaysia) anyway?
